The NCyTE Member Webinar on Friday, June 25, 2021 at 9 a.m. Pacific looked at video resources on National Airspace System cybersecurity on the NCyTE YouTube channel. Dr. Philip Craiger of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University presented the videos he created and explained how faculty and teachers can use them.
Representatives of NCyTE member institutions can view a recording of the webinar online on our website.
Craiger, an NCyTE Center Co-PI, is a Professor of Cybersecurity in the Department of Security Studies and International Affairs at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.
The first video in the series, “Overview of National Airspace System Cybersecurity,” describes the National Airspace System (NAS) and its components, discussing its modernization through the Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen) project and its reliance on information communication technologies using the Internet Protocol (IP).
The second video, “Cyber Threats to Aircraft Systems,” focuses on Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) and the Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System (ACARS), and cyber threats to these systems.
The third video, "National Airspace System and Airport Cybersecurity," explores issues of airport cybersecurity, including airport website security, mobile application security, data exposure, and network vulnerabilities, plus approaches to risk mitigation. It concludes with some steps that travelers may want to take for their personal protection when in airports.
The National Airspace System Cybersecurity video series is one of several video series on the NCyTE YouTube channel providing an overview of applications of cybersecurity normally not typically addressed in information technology or cybersecurity courses. These videos help broaden students' understanding of how cybersecurity affects various domains:
• Maritime Transportation System Cybersecurity video series
• Small UAS (Drone) Cybersecurity video series
• Cyber Supply Chain Risk Management video series
